Tim Johnson Speaks to Business Connections

Tim Johnson Speaks to Business Connections

Word Camp is a 3 day Geek Fest for WordPress I attended last weekend on the UCSF Mission Bay campus. Most what I came away with would bore you to tears, but I come away with some info and stats that might be of interest to the group.

Trending facts:

  • WordPress has increased market share from 8% to over 14% over last year.
  • 92% of surveyed developers/programmers use WordPress as a CMS (content management systems) Platform now.
  • 22% of all domains register are for websites running WordPress.
  • 31% of WordPress installations are using WordPress as a CMS.

Brief history
2005 WordPress started as a simple blogging template that allowed users a clutter free simple admin section that was user centric and user friendly.  Around 2009 WordPress came out with version 2.8 which was a big leap forward in automating online publishing. Today WordPress is up to version 3.2 and has become a robust, full on content management system. Closest competitors, Joomla and Drupal are quickly loosing market share as a result.
